First Aid Training – how it helps!

I did my three day first aid course with Sebastian, I learnt many things I did not know and also refreshed the things I did. The presentation was clear, informative and easy to follow.

I learnt an important feature from the training, which was learning the difference between a heart attack and a stroke which lead me to remember key facts about how to respond.

Another key fact learnt was the use of a defibrillator, which has now been explained to me and I feel confident in using it.

At the end of the training course, we was presented with a very informative and amazing booklet which we can use to touch up on facts.

This training became life saving for myself as a week later, I came home from work and was sitting down watching TV, when I started feeling unlike my usual self, my left side of my face had dropped. I experienced pain down the left side of my neck and that went down my arm. This then made me think of the facts learnt in the first aid course of stroke symptoms with F.A.S.T. I was then able to acknowledge that I needed to get to hospital as I was experiencing many of these symptoms. I was then admitted to hospital for a suspected stroke. I had to have a MRI scan which concluded that I did not have any lasting damage to my brain. I am now recovering and on medication to keep my blood thin and using statins.

I am forever grateful to Sebastian for giving me the first aid course which helped me understand first aid in a simple yet rememberable way.

Kindest regards,

Lorraine Frost.

Extension of first aid certificate dates

Extension of FAW, EFAW, Paediatric First Aid and Emergency Paediatric First Aid

HSE STATEMENT (THURSDAY, 19TH MARCH 2020)
Dear All,

Following the message I sent to you yesterday (18 March 2020) please see below the statement from HSE.

The changes will also apply to Paediatric First Aid and Emergency Paediatric First Aid.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is aware that people holding Offshore Medic (OM), Offshore First Aid (OFA), First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificates nearing expiry date, might experience disruption to access to requalification training as a result of events or circumstances generated by the coronavirus pandemic.

HSE’s current guidance on the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981: https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l74.pdf and the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First-Aid) Regulations 1989 https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l123.pdf is that those holding an OM, OFA, FAW or EFAW qualification should undertake retraining before their original certificate expires and HSE strongly recommends that  employers, and individuals holding those qualifications should plan for requalification training well in advance of expiry dates.

If however requalification training is prevented for reasons associated directly with coronavirus or by complying with related government advice, it is reasonable and practical to extend the validity of current certificates by up to 3 months.  Anyone taking advantage of this extension should be able to describe clearly their reasons for delaying requalification training, and demonstrate steps they have taken to undertake the training, if required.

This guidance comes into effect for certificates expiring on or after 16th March 2020. HSE will review this matter over the coming months and will issue further statements as necessary.
